William Henry Kelly (born Appledore 1844) was captain of the Nelson for one voyage to
Australia (/ New Zealand?) in 1892, leaving England on July 19th. He died in New Zealand
on January 3rd 1893.
(Lloyds "Captains Register" - The Guildhall Library - London)
Nelson was built in 1874 by R. Duncan & Co. of Glasgow and Lloyds Register list her details as follows:
Ship -Iron, 1310 Tons, 239.3 feet long, 36 feet breadth, 20.7 feet depth. She was built initially for
Park Brothers.
She was one of a series of sister ships in the "Auckland Class Sailing Ship" which included
Dunedin, Canterbury, Invercargill, Auckland and Wellington. I believe that the Westland is also classed
as a sister ship. (If anyone has any other or different information, please let me know.)
The picture below is from 1910 and Nelson is on the left.
