Richard Kelly (born Appledore 1857) was master of the Halcione before he became master of the Westland.
Lloyds "Captains Register" (The Guildhall Library - London) record him making five voyages to Australia as
captain of the Halcione between 1887 and 1891. (presumably the entry 'Australia' in the register also
covered New Zealand.)
Halcione was built in 1869 by R. Steele of Greenock and Lloyds Register list her details as follows:
Ship -Iron, 843 Tons, 191.7 feet long, 29.4 feet breadth, 18.8 feet depth. She was built for J Parker & Co.
and acquired by Shaw Saville & Albion in 1880.
In 1888 her rig was reduced to that of a barque
On January 8th 1896 she was lost entering Wellington in Fitzroy Bay, bound for London.
The painting below is by G W White, who it is believed, was at one time employed by the Shaw Savill and
Albion Group to paint portraits of their ships.
